What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Aging takes its toll on every part of your body. The region around your eyes, however, tends to be the first to show the effects. Fatty bulges and hanging skin start to develop around the eyes, creating a “hooded,” old, or tired visage. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, targets those unsightly fat deposits and excess tissue to create a more youthful appearance.

At Apogee Plastic Surgery, you can find an experienced, board-certified surgeon in Dr. John H. Miller. He is delighted to welcome any patient seeking to improve their appearance with eyelid surgery. He works with men and women from Biloxi, Gulfport, Pascagoula, Hattiesburg, Long Beach, Ocean Springs, and the surrounding Mississippi communities.

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Eyelid surgery is usually an outpatient procedure requiring general anesthesia, although some patients may prefer general anesthesia. The operation typically takes one to three hours, depending on whether you are having upper or lower eyelid surgery or both.

For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made in the creases of the upper lids. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made just below the lashes. If you have laughter lines (“crow’s feet”) that you would also like removed, Dr. Miller may extend the incision to the outer corners of your eyes. The wounds are closed with fine sutures and covered with small adhesive strips.

Dr. Miller will make sure you are aware of and comfortable with every aspect of your eyelid surgery. You are encouraged to ask as many questions as you need to during your consultation at Apogee Plastic Surgery.

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

The normal age range for eyelid surgery candidates is 35 and older, although a majority of blepharoplasty patients are above age 50. Sometimes the procedure is performed on younger adults if they have droopy eyelids or large under-eye bags. Most eyelid surgery patients are bothered by the following:

  • Excess skin on the upper lid that sags and interferes with your vision
  • Excess skin on the upper lid that hides the eyelid skin above the lashes
  • Excessive wrinkling on the upper lid
  • Puffiness or bags under the lower lid
  • Excess skin and wrinkles on the lower lids

If you are concerned about the appearance of your eyelids, then Dr. Miller welcomes you for a consultation at Apogee Plastic Surgery in Biloxi. His superior eyelid surgery techniques have changed the lives of men and women in Biloxi, Gulfport, Pascagoula, Hattiesburg, Long Beach, Ocean Springs, and the surrounding Mississippi communities.

What Post-Operative Eyelid Surgery Care Can I Expect?

It is common to feel discomfort after an eyelid surgery. Any swelling and bruising, which can be eased with medication and cold compresses, should subside within two to four weeks. Your eyes may be sticky for a week or so, and you may experience sensitivity to light or blurred vision for a few weeks. The majority of eyelid surgery patients return to work within 10 to 14 days.

You can count on Dr. Miller to give you specific instructions on how to care for yourself after eyelid surgery. He will also keep track of your healing through a series of follow-up appointments at Apogee Plastic Surgery. Our goal is to make sure you are comfortable through the entire blepharoplasty process, from your first consultation to your complete recovery.

What Are the Typical Results of Eyelid Surgery?

Most eyelid surgery patients see a difference as soon as the swelling has gone down, and many report an increase in self-esteem and self-confidence. The best way to learn about typical results is to look at eyelid surgery before and after photos. They are an excellent source of information and will help you see what can be achieved with blepharoplasty.
